When we first pressed 12", one-sided white labels of '7 Ways To Love' in the spring of 1991, we knew we had something that sounded like a hit. The only thing was, it didn't sound much like anything else we'd recorded as Saint Etienne, so we decided to stamp the white labels with the name Cola Boy. Sarah had sung the song and we'd recorded it at Ian Catt's, during the sessions for Foxbase Alpha in the months before. We knew the song was commercial but when it started going nuts in clubs all over the country, and turning up on DJ lists in magazines, we were both shocked and delighted. Not wanting it to detract from our upcoming debut album - we were also signed to Heavenly in the UK and Warner Brothers in the US at the time - Sarah suggested her friend Janey Lee Grace to re-vocal the song, and Pete and I drafted in our dear friend the late Andrew Midgley to stand in for us; the new recording was issued via Arista, making Top Of The Pops and the top 10 before we knew it.
When David Penn requested to remix the song earlier this year he specifically asked for Sarah's original vocal as the white label was the version he knew and loved.
