I've Been Trying To Tell You

Directed by Alasdair McLellan

We're thrilled to share the trailer for the forthcoming film directed by Alasdair McLellan that accompanies our new album.

"Last year I met with Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley in Saltaire, near Bradford, to talk about working together on a film for their new album. When we met, we found we shared so much in common - after all, Saint Etienne's music has always conjured beautiful images for me and influenced my own visual style - the project became something bigger.

The film ended up being a strange road trip around Britain: from Southampton to Portmeirion to Blackpool to Grangemouth to Scunthorpe to London.

It is a film made up of other films; most are an interpretation of my memories from that time, some are borrowed from cinema, others are 'memories' of what I wish life would have been. But all of it was important - whether the memories are real or not." Alasdair McLellan - July 2021

'I've Been Trying To Tell You' will premier at NFT1 on London's Southbank on September 3rd (tickets on sale next week) and is available to pre-order now as a limited edition CD/DVD here: https://saintetienne.ochre.store

Summer's here and the time is right to tell you a heck of a lot of news!

First up, we've made a new album called 'I've Been Trying To Tell You' that will be released on Sept 10th. It was recorded at Pete's Needham Sound studio and with Gurgles hero Gus Bousfield in Bradford. We're very proud of it. People who have heard the record have used words like "reverie" and "dreamlike".

Bob: "To me it's about optimism, and the nineties, and how memory is an unreliable narrator. Pete and Gus have done a properly amazing production job. I think it sounds gorgeous."

Sarah: "It's the first sample driven album we've made since So Tough and it's been a really refreshing experience, such fun! It's both dreamy and atmospheric, late summer sounds."

Pete: "We've really pulled apart and dived deep into the samples; the concept and each of our interpretations of it have made this a very special sounding album, we hope you think so too."

One of our favourite photographers Alasdair McLellan has made a film to accompany the album as well as doing all the stills photography for the record itself. It's beautiful – he's an amazing director and you’ve probably seen some of his Marc Jacobs ads. The film will premiere at NFT1 on the Southbank on 3rd Sept. Full details on the link in the bio.

The premiere will be accompanied by a whole weekend of The Films Of Saint Etienne on the Southbank between the 3rd - 5th of August. Full details on the link in the bio.

The album itself will be available on both black and limited clear vinyl as well as a CD and a limited double disc CD/DVD edition of both the album and the film...you can pre-order certain formats from our brand new music shop.

We're also thrilled that Rough Trade have made I've Been Trying To Tell You their album of the month for September and there's also talk of a Heavenly edition with free flexidisc.

Full details on the link in the bio. (http://www.saintetienne.com/weve-been-trying-to-tell-you)

And as if all that wasn’t enough...if you like your albums 'super deluxe' we will be bringing you news of a limited edition box set very soon.

Lots of exciting news that we've been...trying....dying...to tell you.

Lots of love
Bob, Pete and Sarah xxx

Match Day

Match Day was a super limited CD of football songs we gave away with copies of our Saint Etienne Subbuteo set.

Jeff Wayne rubbing shoulders with Martin Buchan, what could possibly go wrong?

Nothing can stop us now!

Trans-Europe Express

Three of my favourite people - no, I don't mean me - swipe to see the third. Etienne Daho who I love dearly, Ronald Lippok who collaborated with us on 'Sound Of Water' and, of course, Bob!!

Not sure why Pete wasn't here for this shoot, probably busy finishing the record!!
