The Social

This was taken about 10 years ago when we played a special show to celebrate the Social's 10th birthday. It was completely mobbed down there and incredibly hot but the atmosphere was fantastic. It's still the best bar and live venue in central London and we can't wait for it to reopen later this year.

The Saint Etienne Easter Egg Hunt

For a bit of fun we thought we might run a competition this week with a few Saint Etienne collectibles as prizes.

Between Thursday and Saturday this week we will hide three eggs - one each day - amongst the hashtags on old posts. All you have to do is search through instagram posts made on this page since January 1st this year and look for egg and note down the date of the post where you found it. By Saturday we'll have hidden all three eggs - one per day - for you to find.

On Easter Sunday 4th April at 6pm UK time we'll hide an email address in amongst the hashtags - once again this will appear amongst the hashtags on a post made this year.

The first three people to email the given address with the correct dates where the eggs were hidden will receive a prize. Third prize is a copy of our impossibly rare Live - Paris 92 flexi disc.
The person who emails second will receive a copy of the flexi disc plus a rare 7 Inch of Pocket Call.
The person who emails in the correct three dates first will win the flexi, plus a Pocket Call 7 Inch and a copy of our recent After The Rain CD (100 only pressing).

We will announce the names of the winners on Sundays post at 7pm. Happy hunting!!

(saintetienne, easteregghunt, easteregg, flexidisc, pocketcall, aftertherain)

Note: Will need to goto Instagram if you would like to compete in this contest.

How We Used To Live

When How We Used To Live was released we did a short tour of screenings and q&a's in cinemas across the UK. The audiences weren't just Saint Etienne fans so we'd be sat at the back nervously trying to gauge how well it was being received. When people laughed in the right places we started to relax a bit and we had some great chats with audience members and cinema staff afterwards. We also did several screenings with a live soundtrack, which were a real emotional rollercoaster ride, very different to a normal Saint Et gig. I felt very proud (and terrified) to perform it at the Dome in Brighton, where I live, to a home crowd.

Pete Wiggs

The soundtrack to Saint Etienne's fourth film How We Used To Live was issued on this day in 2015. Composed by Pete Wiggs with artwork by Paul Kelly the album was released as a CD and super limited edition of just 500 vinyl copies. The CD and Film are still available from the Heavenly Films online shop or you can listen on Spotify (follow link in bio).

What's your favourite song from this record or scene from the film and did you see one of the live performances of the soundtrack at The Barbican Centre, Brighton Dome, Holmfirth Picturedome, Sheffield Doc Fest or Glasgow GFT?

Gone Fishing

These pictures show Mick Bund and I on the bayous in Slidell, Louisiana, back in the mid 80s. Mick loved fishing and we even got to play a few gigs in New Orleans whilst we were there.

I remember we went night fishing once and a huge wake (of unknown origin) came heading down the bayou towards us and we legged it sharpish!

We really enjoyed recording Sound Of Water in Berlin although it was incredibly cold. I think the sound of the city is somehow captured in the album.

The Wall

I took this picture in the kitchen at Debsey's old flat in Turnpike House. The opening shot to Pink Floyd's video for The Wall was filmed from the roof of the building in 1979 and was identical to the view we had from the kitchen window.

The Misadventures Of Saint Etienne

Originally released in Japan only via the L'Appareil-Photo label Misadventures... was the soundtrack to a film we had worked on called The Misadventures Of Margaret staring Parker Posey and Brooke Shields.

Originally pressed on clear vinyl we re-issued the album as a special fan club release on both white and black vinyl in 2019.

What's your favourite song from this one and has anyone ever seen the film?

Clenbuterol

I think we'd all been members of fan clubs, or appreciation societies, growing up, so we thought we should do our own newsletter once Foxbase Alpha came out and we had a bit of a following. (I was a member of ones for Madness, Dusty Springfield, the Monkees, the Beach Boys and Elvis. The Madness one was clearly done by them - lots of jokes about Rod Stewart, I remember).

We called it Clenbuterol as it happened to be a peculiar word in the news a lot prior to the 1992 Olympics - athletes kept testing positive for Clenbuterol. Try googling it now and it sounds like I'm making this up!

I'm not sure how we filled it but we did. After a while, it was put together by our dear friends Andy Rossiter, and later by Andrew Walsh. The digital age did for it, but it was fun while it lasted.

Live And Let Die

I always knew I was very lucky as a kid. I got the chance to travel so much and to experience some amazing things that I knew weren't your everyday stuff. This is a photo of me in New Orleans watching my dad at work on the set of Live And Let Die and you can see my mum behind me on the other side of the pillar. The actor standing to the right is David Hedison and this was taken during the filming for the jazz funeral scene with me hovering behind dad's first assistant director chair.

Apparently I went missing later that day and was eventually found playing pool with members of the crew in a bar! The 70's eh!?

Nerja

We shot the video for Pale Movie with Jamie Fry in Nerja on the Costa del Sol. Pretty sure it was January but still blazing sunshine, but not too hot to be clad in Paul Smith suits all day.

We stayed in a hotel called the Balcony of Europe. Having arrived in the dead of night we were surprised to be greeted by stunning views in the morning. The video was meant to be a parody of quasi deep and meaningful pop videos, with portentous seeming shots of sunglasses being trampled on, flowers angrily thrown down, a young hipster holding a sign we have always eaten our own etc. And it's finished off naturally with a quote from Neil Diamond: The Road... She's the god damnedest woman you ever saw.

Pete Wiggs - March 2021

My other memory of this shoot is that we went to a bar in the evening and everyone in there suddenly stopped talking, stood up, and did this formation dance. What was going on? The DJ was playing Saturday Night by Whigfield, which none of us had heard before it wouldn't be a hit in Britain for another couple of months. The pre-digital world!

A London Trilogy

The Films Of Saint Etienne 2003-2007

A London Trilogy is a BFI DVD collection that gathers together our first three full length films plus seven shorts made in collaboration with Paul Kelly. It includes the Paul Kelly, Kieran Evans directed Finisterre.

We've had some great times working with Paul on films and videos over the years. I particularly enjoyed our trips to the Lea Valley area when filming Mervyn Day before the area was transformed by the Olympics.

It was a boiling hot summer; we'd assist Paul by carrying film paraphernalia, annoy him by suggesting shots, plotting ideas for the soundtrack and direction of the film, testing local cafes and stopping for the odd pint on the way home.

Loaded

I was a little anxious after agreeing to appear in Loaded magazine and didn't know quite what to expect, especially when the stylist turned up to the shoot with a suitcase full of nothing but underwear!

I pulled out the most modest items I could find, which didn't go down that well, and wondered how I could escape this whole situation without leaving my reputation in tatters!

I was really out of my comfort zone but in the end the shoot went well, the photographer was lovely and the location in Little Venice was beautiful. The photo's turned out kinda cheeky, no?

Pinkus

Me and Pete had a flat off fashionable Holloway Road in the early nineties, which we shared with our cat Pinkus. She was called Pinkus because of her very pink nose - we were amused to later discover that Barry Manilow's real name is Barry Pincus. But I got the feeling Pinkus was more into Metalheadz than Manilow.

I picked up that TV/radio at a jumble sale. The TV never worked. It was permanently tuned to Radio 2, so I woke up to Wogan. I'd lay money on that bedshirt being an XXL World Of Twist t-shirt, the one based on an Embassy fag packet.
