Groupie

"The sparkly top was my mum's and Bob and Pete were wearing tee shirts with the Groupie logo borrowed from the Jenny Fabian and Johnny Byrne paperback of the same name. It was 1991 and anything and everything seemed possible."

Bubble Car

Pete Wiggs: "We did this shoot with Steve Double who had a studio in Leather Lane off Clerkenwell Road."

Sarah Cracknell: "It was for the NME. We'd just released 'You're In A Bad Way' and 'So Tough' came out a week later. I loved that trouser suit I'm wearing!"

Bob: "This was a pretty exciting time; NME cover, a top 20 single and a top 10 album"

"I've Been Trying To Tell You"

"It's rare for a band to have a new idea after being together for five years, let alone thirty. That Saint Etienne not only had a brilliant idea, but also made it come to life so fully and so beautifully, is nothing short of miraculous."
Allmusic 9/10

This record is available to stream - via the link in our bio - or on vinyl, CD and DVD from all good record shops now.

Film extract: taken from 'I've Been Trying To Tell You By' directed by Alasdair McLellan.

Scouts of America

We've been getting some lovely reviews for I've Been Trying To Tell You from America...

"Their work... encourages us to view the possibilities of memory anew. It's music about loving music so much you need to make something as homage." The New Yorker

"It's a hallucinatory, dreamlike album about how memories change and become distorted over time, but more than anything I've Been Trying to Tell You is a vibe and a mood that recalls the last days of summer and youth when life was good and carefree." Brooklyn Vegan

"Pond House meditates in a wide-open soundscape" New York Times

"I've Been Trying To Tell You is an atmospheric bounty... engulfing the listener in a shimmering strata of vocals and keys. Time and time again, Saint Etienne have affirmed their penchant for crafting songs and visuals that stimulate the heart, mind and soul, and I've Been Trying To Tell You holds true to their well-established blueprint." Album-ism - 5 stars

"The result is euphoric… Saint Etienne manage to capture peace with an underlying sense of unease, offering a moment, a loop or a hook to meditate on in trying times." Paste

"Saint Etienne are that most thoughtful of bands; a track like Fonteyn could use a bibliography... I Remember It Well should be enshrined among the band's loveliest of songs."

Pitchfork "Saint Etienne conjures a dreamy slice of downtempo electronic music." The Washington Post

"It's a stunning feat that the group has accomplished here. Saint Etienne have crafted a challenging and rewarding work that manages to be incredibly emotionally resonant on multiple levels." Qobuz
