Pep

It's with great sadness that we mourn the loss of a close and important member of the Saint Etienne family. Andrew 'Pep' Peppiatt who has been with us for virtually every Saint Etienne live show since 1992 is now at peace and things won't be the same without him.

Pep was a constant and vital part of the Saint Etienne touring party handling front of house sound, monitors, driving, backline, occasional tour manager duties and just about everything else in-between.

We poached him from George Melly and the PA system he'd been running at the Camden Falcon in the early 90s and have been around the world together several times.

Pep faced the challenges thrown at him over the last 18 months with incredible courage and was present and on duty as per usual at our Glastonbury performance last year.

Thanks for everything Pep and although you'd hate us saying it, we love you.

Sarah, Bob and Pete xxx

Sending love and hugs to Sue.

Full Of Days

Hermione Burton & Andy Holden, with music by Saint Etienne

We urge anyone who's in London over the next two weeks to visit the 'Full Of Days' exhibition at the Gallery Of Everything on Chiltern Street, W1.

It's a fascinating exhibit of one artist's personal response to another artist's life which includes a 40 minute documentary soundtracked by Saint Etienne and narrated by Sarah Cracknell.

In 2017, artist Andy Holden came across a curious group of eclectic paintings in a charity shop in his hometown of Bedford. The bold signature declared the author's name: Hermione. Accompanying the artworks were framed photographs of the artist and a self-published autobiography, Hermione Burton: A Journey Through the Paintings, a thin booklet which described the major events of the artist's life, her creative evolution and her ongoing struggles with ill health.

Sensing instinctively that this was a meaningful body of work with a personal relevance, Holden purchased the entire group of artworks. These, other paintings by Burton and new works by Holden are gathered together for the 'Full Of Days' exhibition.

At the centre of the project is Holden's forty-minute film, 'Kingdom of the Sick', titled in reference to Susan Sontag's 1978 essay Illness as Metaphor. Alternating between documentary, biography and fiction, Kingdom of the Sick uses digital technology to re-animate Hermione as narrator of her own history, guiding the viewer through her life and work with language excerpted from her unpublished autobiography.

Hermione's voice and facial expressions have a strange otherworldly quality. The role is provided through motion capture by Sarah Cracknell, vocalist of the band Saint Etienne. Saint Etienne also provide the film's original soundtrack, lending the project a sense of reflective, ethereal drama.

Happy Birthday Sarah!!

Please join Pete and Bob in wishing Sarah a happy birthday.

"My favourite tea mug is the sole survivor of a set given to me as a birthday present by you many moons ago; its a bit 90s, chipped round the edges and I fear its days are numbered yet it still gives me great joy and I hope I'll get several years more service out of it (not a metaphor for the band!!). I shall fill it with bubbly and raise a toast to you today. Pete xxx" Pete Wiggs - East Sussex - 12th April 2023

"Happy birthday, dear girl. Have a smashing day. See you soon, Love Bob xx" Bob Stanley - Yorkshire - 12th April 2023
